This is a book I’m glad I bought, but others might want to get it in paperback.Season 1 Secret Origins B. Poor research marred what should have been a fun appearance.Īlso, the conceit of attacking the Justice Society one by one is clever, but they should have gone back and forth between the more recognizable members and the lesser-known ones. But in this series he is protrayed as the weakest member of the Justice Society and can barely defeat a Batman villain. ![]() For one thing, the author obviously didn’t know/understand that the Golden Age Atom eventually developed atomic powers including an atomic punch. These are some of my favorite characters but I can’t say the stories used them well at all. The stories end with guest appearances from the DC characters from the 1940’s, the “Golden Age” Atom, "Golden Age" Dr. Without the coloring everything tends to look the same. In the two stories that were never finished, you can't tell the characters apart. Vosburg's body types are all identical and that takes away from his storytelling somewhat. It's better than I could ever do obviously, but it seems strangely static today.Īlso, Mr. I can't say I care much for the art, unfortunately. I know Arvell Jones was another member of the "Detroit Mob" artists - which I think included Vosburg, too, and other artists like Keith Pollard, and Mike Nassar). (There is a similarity to the three men’s styles that seems to have been intentional. Mike Vosberg took over the pencils in the main title from Rich Buckler. But the stories ended up looking rushed and poorly thought out. It was sometimes clever (like the Wizard’s plan to attack the Justice Society of America - the Justice League’s counterpart on Earth-2). Mostly, the title was mediocre at this point. This was the era of the DC Implosion - an era where DC comics cancelled almost half of its published titles. All of those stories worked fairly well, internally, although they are old-fashioned. Jones also provided art for two more team-up stories featuring other Justice Leaguers. The Justice League and Captain Comet shut down part of the Secret Society in one of the tales with art by Arvell Jones. The next part of the book featured stories from two other titles that guest-starred the Secret Society - “DC Special Series” and “Super-Team Family” (These team up adventures are a mixed lot. Mainly because the other Secret Society of Super-Villain stories have not aged well. Maybe it was as much fun for him as it was for me.Īnyway, I was very happy they included it. ![]() But it was fun.Īlso, the regular series artist, Rich Buckler, did a better job than average on the art. If you thought about the whole thing for very long you would probably die laughing. Just stringing those words together in a sentence gives you an idea of what the story was like. It has one of my favorite stories from the 1970's featuring Captain Comet, Tommy Tomorrow, a walking Tyrannosaurus-rex-man-mutant, and the Atom's foe, Chronos the Time Thief. It also has two issues from the original series of comic books that were never printed because the series was cancelled before they were colored and lettered. I bought this book in hardcover because I lost my original comic book copies decades ago.
